MESI: A Multiparameter Eddy Significance Index

In this study, we introduce the Multiparameter Eddy Significance Index (MESI) for use in conjunction with mesoscale eddy tracking to estimate impact of eddies on upper ocean and marine ecosystems. MESI combines blended satellite observations sea level anomalies, surface temperature, salinity, color chlorophyll-a is a normalized index. When used tracking, can highlight those which extend into deeper have greater effect nutrient cycling. Preliminary analysis Gulf Stream region western North Atlantic shows that covaries model estimates nitrate, phosphate, iron, pH cross-correlation values between 76% 95%. These results suggest when concert it be as an indicator areas are more likely cycling ocean. An additional inside during Hurricane Dorian (2019) along Carolina coast further suggests most effective enhance provides valuable insight activity circulation.
